Transport properties of nano-silica contained self-consolidating concrete

The transport properties of various self-consolidating concretes (SCCs) containing nano-silica (NS) were investigated. Powder NS replaced a portion of the cementitious materials at different replacement levels ranging from 1.5 to 7.5% by weight. The flow, bulk, and transport properties of the studied SCCs were obtained. The investigated transport properties included water and capillary absorption, water penetration, rapid chloride permeability, rapid migration, and chloride diffusion. The transport properties of the SCCs containing NS were also compared to those of the equivalent SCCs containing micro-silica (MS), as well as those of the control SCCs. Test results showed that the transport properties of the studied SCCs improved with increases of NS replacing a portion of cementitious materials, as well as with the extension of curing age. The SCCs containing MS produced slightly better transport properties than the companion SCCs containing powder NS.
