Seismic behavior of masonry walls retrofitted by centercore technique: A numerical study

In this paper, the seismic behavior of masonry walls retrofitted utilizing the centercore technique was numerically investigated through calibrated finite element modeling and analyses. A parametric study was conducted considering control walls without retrofit and retrofitted walls with centercore rebars both anchored and not anchored to the foundation and implementing different retrofit configurations, wall height-to-length ratios, applied surcharges, mortar shear strengths, rebar diameters, and drill hole diameters. Totally, 450 numerical analyses were carried out and the effect of considered parameters on in-plane shear strength, stiffness, and ductility of retrofitted walls were investigated. Analytical calculations were performed based on ASCE/SEI 41-17 Standard formulations and simplified equations were proposed to estimate the ultimate strength and effective stiffness of these walls. The results of this study signified that the proposed relations could capture the shear resistance and stiffness of retrofitted walls with acceptable accuracy. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd.
