We were all heads over heels in love with the compact disc in 1982, but by the late 1990s the romance was on the skids. The new digital darling, the DVD, had upstaged the CD. The record industry scrambled for a comeback and hitched its future to two high-resolution hopefuls-Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio. But a funny thing happened on the way to the New Millennium. Most music fans ignored the power discs and embraced lower-than-CD-resolution audio "formats"-MP3s and Apple Computer Inc.'s iTunes. SACD and DVD-A keep showing up at the dance, but haven't yet, well, scored.
