The Italian government has called on the European Union (EU) to use the proceeds of a €12 per tonne of sugar 'production charge' levied on EU sugar producers since 2007 to help the sector prepare for the abolition of production quotas on 1 October 2017. In a paper presented to the EU Council of Ministers, Rome warned that the decision to abolish sugar quotas and sharply falling sugar selling prices are "causing strong impacts for the economic viability of the entire EU sugar sector". It argued that prices are now so low that "many operators in different member states... will not produce anymore… Farmers will abandon growing beets…"
