The building has an imposing height of 48 metres and towers above an artificially constructed hill directly in front of the gates of the main factory in Stuttgart, Untertuerkheim. The heart of the new World of Mercedes-Benz will be the "legend of the Mercedes-Benz Badge", which the visitors will be able to experience at first hand. The museum occupies a ground area of only about 35 00 m~2 in the 60 000 m~2 of grounds that will be artistically modelled after the building has been completed. In spite of this the distinctively designed building provides a display area of 17 000 m~2, so it has sufficient space for a journey through the past, present and future of the car with its characteristic star symbol. In 2001 ten architectural offices were invited to submit their designs for the new museum. In the end the architectural team of UN Studio van Berkel & Bos, Holland, were successful and obtained the contract. Building work has continued on the unique structure since the foundation stone was laid on 17th September 2003. The carcass with its four component units, namely museum, services area, linking block and arena, as well as the multistorey car park will be finished by January 2005. The building is designed without any corners or edges as it replicates a double helix. After the visitors have been taken up the inside of the building to the top by lifts they are offered two spiral galleries extending from top to bottom that illustrate the theme topics of legend and collection. 180 vehicle exhibits and a variety of displays, linked by new media, the latest electronic equipment and a classical technical support system aimed at specific target groups, can be experienced on nine levels. The general contractor, the DaimlerChrysler Immobiliengesellschaft in Berlin, awarded the contract for the carcass work to Ed. Zueblin AG, Stuttgart, and Wolff & Mueller GmbH & Co. KG, Stuttgart. They are acting as the "New Mercedes-Benz Museum" building consortium, with Zueblin leading the technical side and Wolff & Mueller the commercial side. Experts consider that implementation of the unusual building design lies at the boundaries of what is technically feasible. It presents a special challenge for the construction work and, in particular, for the formwork engineering supplied by Peri GmbH from Weissenhorn.
