The management of post-tensioned concrete bridges

Rs esearch on the durability of post-tensioned bridges has been undertaken at TRL for almost 30 years, much of it funded by the Highways Agency. This was initiated by concerns on the effectiveness of grouting and the risk of tendon corrosion. Various studies have discovered voids in the post-tensioning ducts of many structures. The collapse of the Ynys-y-gwas Bridge, South Wales and problems with a number of other post-tensioned bridges in the UK during the 1980s also demonstrated flaws with this type of structure. As a result, the Department of Transport, then in charge of highway structures, placed a moratorium on this construction type and undertook an inspection programme on the post-tensioned bridge stock (see Figure 1).
