When an existing floor is inappropriate for its intended use or, due to the specification, a floor currently being designed is to be constructed as a structural slab topped later by a particular finish, a floor screed is often an important option. The purpose of this article is to consider the factors that may influence the selection of the screed or topping to help specifiers quickly evaluate the most appropriate screed types for particular applications. Each situation will have its specific requirements, and Table 1 gives the options and selection criteria in terms of thickness, cost and performance of various types of screed.
