Concrete for a sustainable future - a report on The Institute of Concrete Technology (ICT) Convention 2006

If you were told that the newly built house you were buying had a design life of 50 years, would you buy it? This question was asked of the audience by one of the speakers at this year's Convention. Fifty years is the life assumed for houses for the calculation of lifetime costs. The question introduced a comment based on current research which suggests that a heavyweight house (built of concrete and bricks) is actually more environmentally-friendly that a lightweight house (built of timber and insulation), if the latter is going to require air-conditioning in the future. All the available information will be included in the ICT Year Book along with the texts of the other ten papers presented at this Convention.
