The use of fly ash as a cementltlous component of concrete has a long and successful history In the UK. In part this has been achieved by the use of factory-produced Portland-fly ash cement. Bill Price of Lafarge Cement UK reports.rnPortland-fly ash cements are defined in the European cement standard EN 197-1 and contain up to 35% fly ash combined with cement clinker. Fly ash is a pozzolanic material reacting with lime (Ca(OH)_2) produced by the hydration of clinker to produce C-S-H gel (also the main reaction product of Portland-cement hydration). Not only does the fly ash content contribute to the strength and durability of the cement, and the concrete in which it is used, it also reduces the embodied carbon dioxide in the cement.
