Sand and gravel deposits are commonly found in the south-east of the UK, with the fundamental difference between sand and gravel being the particle size. Essentially any material that passes through a 5mm sieve, but retained on a 63 micron sieve, is classed as sand; all particles retained on the 5mm sieve are classed as gravel. Although Blashford quarry possesses substantial reserves of sand, they are not as prevalent as the gravel deposits. This is particularly pertinent as there is now a global shortage of natural sand, with this being primarily due to worldwide government legislation that has been brought in to help prevent deforestation and to allow sand beds to be used as natural water filters. Thus, the combination of environmental pressures, costs and a shortage of naturally occurring sand has necessitated the manufacture of sand from quarried material. It is the shortage of sand in its natural form that has presented Tarmac with the opportunity to use its existing gravel deposits to satisfy the demands of the construction industry. This is achieved through not only being able to supply a manufactured sand product but also by being able to improve on the naturally occurring sand. How this is accomplished is due to manufactured sand possessing significant benefits over the naturally occurring form, as it originates directly from high-quality virgin rock and thus contains very few, if any, contaminants that are found in naturally occurring sand.
