Concrete March reported on the largest-ever continuous underwater concrete pour, carried out as part of the construction of the Forth Replacement Crossing in Scotland, with a focus on the mix design necessary for the project. Here, Susan Ward of Professional Concrete Pumping looks at the pumping and placement of the concrete. Construction on the Forth Replacement Crossing commenced in the summer of 2011, due to the deterioration in condition of the neighbouring Forth Road Bridge and concerns over its long-term viability. The new three-tower 2.7km (1.6 mile) cable-stayed bridge is due to be opened to traffic by the end of 2016. The new bridge's towers will be 207m above high tide - 25% higher than the current Forth Road Bridge. A total of 30,000 tonnes of steel and 150,000m~3 of concrete will be used to construct the new bridge, which will support a two-lane motorway with hard shoulder and include modern wind shielding to protect traffic from the effects of wind buffeting.
