Tensile splitting strength as an assessment criterion for concrete paving blocks

For quite some time the quality specifications for concrete paving blocks have been defined by DIN 18501. This relates to the specifications for condition, dimensions, resistance to the action of freeze-thaw and de-icing salt, and compressive strength. An important change with the introduction of the European standard prEN 1338 - expected in mid 2001 - will be the replacement of compressive strength by tensile splitting strength.%Seit geraumer Zeit sind durch die DIN 18501 die Qualitätsanforderungen an Pflastersteine aus Beton vorgegeben. Dies betrifft die Anforderungen an Beschaffenheit, Abmessungen, Widerstandsfähigkeit gegen Frost- und Tausalzeinwirkung und die Druckfestigkeit. Durch Einführung der Euronorm prEN1338 - voraussichtlich Mitte 2001 - wird als wesentliche Änderung die Druckfestigkeit durch die Spaltzugfestigkeit ersetzt.
