The construction of the largest wind farm in France, with 70 wind turbines, began in November 2006 in the large municipality of Fruges in Northern France. The wind turbines to be erected, of the type Enercon E70 and rated at 2 MW each, normally have flat foundations, partly in conjunction with a foundation pad of varying thickness. However, eight sites constituted an exception to this, due to insufficient load bearing capacity of the building ground, making deep foundations necessary.
