The work typically involved in planning and executing fair-faced concrete is very complex, as well as expensive. Nevertheless, undesirable light and dark discolorations that considerably detract from the appearance of fair-faced concrete surfaces occur again and again, particularly under winter production conditions. At the Center for Building Materials and Materials Testing (cbm) at Munich Technical University, laboratory experimentation has succeeded in simulating the discolorations that appear in concreting practice by varying environmental and production conditions, enabling researchers to determine the influencing parameters that cause light and dark discolorations.
