Denver has a history of success in the mass transit business which started with the creation of the Regional Transportation District (RTD) in 1969. The RTD was tasked with the development, operation and maintenance of a mass transportation system for the benefit of the 2.5 million people in the District. The District includes stretches across eight counties and includes the city and county of Denver, the city and county of Broomfield, the counties of Boulder and Jefferson, the western portions of Adams and Arapahoe counties, the northeastern portion of Douglas county and the small portions of Weld county annexed by Longmont and Erie—some 2,327 square miles in all. Across the district, the RTD operates 1,071 buses on 174 routes and 70 light rail vehicles on 35 miles of track.
