Temperature-control measures used in the construction of the Gomal Zam RCC arch-gravity dam were appropriate for preventing thermal cracking of RCC in a hot weather region. The precooling of aggregates and mixing water ensured the specified low placement temperature, and the post-cooling of the placed RCC decreased the peak temperature and allowed the timely achievement of the final temperature required for joint grouting. The procedures developed for the project ensured that the installation of the cooling pipes did not interfere with rapid RCC construction, and they safeguarded the cooling pipes from damage by heavy equipment.
