Designers must evaluate wind-induced lateral deflections for high-rise buildings. For drift-sensitive buildings, deflections may be determined using loads based on a storm with a 50- or 100-year mean recurrence interval, selected in consultation with the client. For many high-rise buildings, however, designers typically calculate lateral deflections for unfactored wind forces based on storms with 10-year mean recurrence intervals for effects on occupants and cladding. Sections 6.6.3.1 and 6.6.3.2 of the ACI 318 Code provide section properties to be used in the lateral load analysis of walls. Section 6.6.3.1 provides properties used for elastic analysis under factored loads, and Section 6.6.3.2 provides a modification factor to increase these properties for analysis under service loads.
