If anything, consolidation in the global logistics industry has gone further than in the ocean carrier sector as companies have sought global mass, regional strength and expertise in all aspects of the transport supply chain. John Fossey spoke exclusively to Otto Schacht, a senior vice president of Kuehne+Nagel, about developments at the Swiss company. Kuehne+Nagel (K+N) is a large and well-established logistics company, and, like its main competitors, it is getting bigger. It seems that in today's highly competitive trading environment, bigger is better - and being bigger gives companies a much higher chance of survival (see 'World at their feet', pp74-77). Building mass also means having a sizeable presence in all parts of the supply chain in order to offer customers a 'fuller and deeper range of services', according to Otto Schacht, a company senior vice president responsible for the seafreight business.
