The practice of transferring shipments from the vehicle of one transport mode to a different mode, with no storage in-between. Two types of transloading are undertaken by logistics service providers in the US on behalf of shippers: 1. Rail transloading: The transfer of goods from rail to road. Under this system the contents of either US domestic rail cars or marine containers (20ft/40ft/45ft units, which have moved intermodally by sea/rail) into US domestic (48ft or 53ft) trailers. As explained by the 3PL Weber Distribution, this enables shippers to 'take advantage of the long haul economies of rail and flexibility of road transportation.
