The Mediterranean region has been the hot spot in world trade during the past few years, with containerised imports from Asia growing by a remarkable 24% in 2006, followed by another 24% this year, according to CI's calculations. Much the same is expected next year, which means that by the end of the period, cargo availability for ocean carriers will have almost doubled since 2005, up to a staggering 5.8 million TEU/annum.
