Rising levels or congestion at the Tanzania International Container Terminal Services Ltd. (TICTS) facility in Dar es Salaam has forced Hutchison Port Holdings, which has majority control of the terminal, to take action. Recent months have seen several ocean carriers scale back their liner services, while calls for the operator of the port's dedicated container terminal to be replaced have gathered momentum. While TICTS has been involved in various discussions with the country's port authority and other stakeholders with some progress having been made since a special congestion committee was set up earlier this year, HPH has now made some very important changes. Significantly, TICTS, which is controlled by Hong Kong-based Hutchison Port Holdings, has replaced Nazir Karamagi, the former chairman of the board, with John Meredith, HPH's managing director, based in Hong Kong.
