Competition between China's Pearl river delta ports and Hong Kong has never been so fierce, with both the latter and terminals such as Shenzhen and Guangzhou upping their game in a bid to attract more cargo. Does Hong Kong still stand a chance against its mainland rivals? Rebecca Moore reports. The Shenzhen port complex, which comprises facilities at Yantian, She-kou and Chiwan, looks likely to surpass Hong Kong as the world's third largest container port this year. In 2007 Shenzhen occupied fourth place in the container port traffic league with a throughput of 21.1 million TEU - a jump of 14% from 2006. While Hong Kong was still ahead, the margin had been narrowed considerably with the latter posting a much slower rate of growth (just 1.4% in 2007 over the previous 12 months).
