SMALLER CARRIERS ADJUST TO THE CASCADE EFFECT

The impact of vessel upsizing is not restricted to the big box lines, as the knock-on effect of cascading is increasingly felt by the smaller carriers. For example, there are just over 100 vessels of 7,000 teu-10,000 teu capacity on the Asia-Europe trade, and there are major question marks over their longevity on the route, given the number of larger ships due to be rolled out from now up until 2016. Many of these ships will have to be relocated elsewhere. Subsequently, the ships on these trades will filter down to the routes that are home to the majority of smaller lines.
