Concrete is the most important construction material and is also used in the largest amounts. Although there are no international statistics concerning concrete usage, on the assumption that cementproduced in 2007 (2.77billion tonnes) was used entirely for concrete, and that 7.7 tonnes of concrete can be produced with 1 tonne of cement, the concrete production for the year is estimated at approximately 21.2 billion tonnes (the actual value is smaller, since cement is also used as other construction and soil amendment materials). Since the global population is approximately 6.6 billion, this figure corresponds to a consumption level of approximately 3.2 tonnes per person. It can therefore be seen that concrete is the second most-used material on earth after water. This article presents the state of CO_2 emissions related to concrete and scenarios for their reduction.
