This book discusses programming and interfacing with two specific members of the Texas Instruments MSP430 family of mixed-signal microcontrollers, namely MSP430FR2433 and MSP430FR5994. It has 12 chapters and is part of Morgan & Claypool's "Synthesis Lectures on Digital Circuits and Systems" series. The book is aimed at upper-level undergraduate courses on microcontrollers or mechatronics. The first chapter is a brief introduction to microcontrollers, including a short history of these devices along with an overview of the MSP430 microcontroller family. The hardware and software tools used in the rest of the chapters are introduced. An introduction to C programming, for operating the microcontrollers, forms the basis of the second chapter. Many examples are given, and software tools such as Energia are reviewed. There are many similarities between programming the 32-bit MSP432 and programming the 16-bit MSP430. The third chapter focuses on the hardware architecture of the MSP430 and its instruction set. The hardware subsystems and addressing modes are discussed. The fourth chapter looks at several input and output devices and how to interface correctly with the MSP430 microcontroller. The fifth chapter describes the power management system of the MSP 430. The memory components on the MSP430, such as the new non-volatile ferroelectric random access memory (FRAM), RAM, and electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM), are discussed in chapter 6.
