The proceedings of annual conferences are interesting, not only for the individual papers they contain, but also as panoramic snapshots of the field with which they are concerned. Such is the case with this collection of papers, from the Second European Semantic Web Conference (ESWC 2005). This volume covers a wide spectrum of recent semantic Web research. It is organized into nine topic areas, containing 48 research papers in all. Well-represented categories include semantic Web services and related topics (six papers), languages (seven papers), ontologies (eight papers), reasoning and queries (six papers), search and retrieval (five papers), and applications (six papers). Other areas include annotation tools (four papers), and research focused on users and on natural language (three papers each).
