The Pillsbury Doughboy, Tony the Tiger, Toucan Sam, Sonny the Cuckoo Bird, and a handful of other iconic television commercial "spokes characters" have an extra spring in their step. That's because these popular product "pitchmen," who have appeared in numerous commercials during the past few decades, are now sporting a new computer-generated look. "Audiences are more sophisticated than they used to be, and they want to see something that's bigger, better, and more dynamic," says Dale Carman, chief visionary at Reel FX in Dallas, which recently completed a series of TV spots featuring a 3D GI Joe, "I remember seeing GI Joe on TV when I was a kid and I thought it looked great. But now when I look at [the original character], I realize how simple it seems compared to the 3D version."
