In addition to their usual push, vendors are offering products that will take advantage of the 64-bit processors that are coming to market. They are also proposing better methods for managing unstructured XML data within the envelope of a relational database. The outcome of these activities will depend on whether potential buyers can be, convinced that migrating to bigger machines can produce positive returns. Whether the relational database model, that has served the industry as its mainstream data model for the last decade, needs to be updated to accommodate XML is another question in cost effectiveness that needs to be answered in the marketplace.
