Watch out for your video dinner. The telcos are ravenous, and video-over-IP technologies mean they can deliver TV services efficiently, without wasting bandwidth or equipment resources. Though the digital set-top box is a familiar fixture in million of living rooms, its functionality will not stay the same for long. Tomorrow's version will likely provide more than a way to change channels and watch pay-per-view (PPV) or video-on-demand (VOD). It will be used to deliver audio and videophone service, surf the Web, play interactive games and more. Furthermore, tomorrow's set-tops could just as likely be deployed in homes by telco providers as they are now by cable operators.
