Food Safety After Fukushima: Scientific Citizenship and the Politics of Risk

This six-chapter ethnography of post 3.11 Japan is an impressive resource for those interested in expanding their atlas of risk, crisis, and political communications, and provides a solid linguistic analysis of a timely cross-cultural case study in how public trust in government authority waxes and wanes based on perceptions of food safety and the threat of contamination by nuclear radiation in the soil, the air, the ocean. The author began the research at the Program on US-Japan Relations at the Weatherhead Center of Harvard University, continued the field work at the Institute of Comparative Culture at Sophia University and at Waseda University, presented the findings at a dozen scholarly interdisciplinary societies, and was funded by the Japan Foundation plus two other Asian research societies. He teaches at Southern Methodist University.
