Cris Services has put the first DAF CF 8×4 with mixer body to have a rear-steer axle on the road. The DAF CF450 FAW 8×4 will be used by the London-based firm to transport wet cement-mix on behalf of Hanson UK. The 36-strong fleet already has a high percentage of DAFs with 20 units in total, but it was the arrival of several Volvo FM Tridems that got Cristian Calina, MD at Cris Services, thinking about adding a mixer body to a DAF rear-steer chassis. "We went for the FAW because we wanted to try a rear-steer axle on a DAF. We have five Volvo Tridems with rear steer, and they're really good for getting into tight spaces. I said to DAF, 'If you've got the chassis, I'm willing to use it for a new mixer'," Calina said. The FAW has been specified with a 10.8-litre 450hp engine with TraXon 12-speed transmission and is on a 4.55m wheelbase with a sleeper cab. Plated at 32 tonnes, it has a tare weight of just 12,600kg, having been carefully specified to ensure that the mixer body will be able to transport 8cu m of product. The air-suspended drive axles are a double-driven SR1360T tandem bogie with single reduction and lockable differential. Meanwhile, the steering trailed axle is a 09G075, also with air suspension. The front axle has parabolic springs with shock absorbers and stabilisers. Axle load ratings for the rear configuration are 13,13 and 8 tonnes from front to back, while the front axle has a 9-tonne maximum.
