THE CAMERA NEVER LIES

HGV camera and video systems are now a must-have piece of technology across fleets of all sizes. In a recent CM Camera White Paper (free to download at commercialmotor.com), three-quarters of operators had already made a purchase of such equipment, with the majority of the rest planning to take the plunge within 12 months. Improved driver behaviour, a reduction in incident reporting, lower fuel consumption and the ability to disprove false claims are just some of the benefits CM's survey highlighted. From a fleet operator's perspective, the business case seems clear-cut. But truck operators may first need to put in some groundwork to help their drivers see the technology as a benefit, rather than an unwanted intrusion - particularly when it comes to driver-facing cameras. A quick search on popular drivers' forum Trucknet shows several threads debating the use of in-cab cameras, with many perceiving them as too intrusive.
