A TRANSPORT LAWYER has warned that the heavier penalties for health and safety breaches, which were brought in last year, could force some haulage firms into bankruptcy. Vikki Woodfine, partner at DWF, warned that as well as potentially ruinous fines, companies were having to pay to contest their cases in court as she claimed the Health and Safety Executive was bringing the majority of cases at the highest level of culpability. This was forcing firms to go to court to argue for a lesser offence.
