Much is written about piracy and its cost to owners, insurers et al. But little was known about the thoughts of those that face these attacks, until now. What is a seafarer's perception of piracy and/ or their awareness of it? And what do they want their employers and governments to do about it? Last year, seafarers' organisation Nautilus asked several hundred of its British and Dutch members for their views and opinions. It was not a scientific study, but the recently published results do add another dimension to the debate. As the mass media reports the latest spate of attacks and hijackings in the Gulf of Aden and some shipowners decide whether to boycott the area in favour of a longer, but safer, voyage around Africa, seafarers have been suggesting the measures they think would be most effective in improving security and reducing the risk of attack.
