Over the last 30 years, since they first appearedrnon UN passports, holograms have made rapidrngains in ID anti-counterfeiting, moving initially fromrnan authentication device to the protection of personalrnbio data contained within the passport.rnThis has been further underpinnedrnby the EU, which saw adoption inrn2004 of its draft security standardsrnfor passports. Another major driverrnfor the inclusion of holographicrntechnology on ID documents camernwhen the ICAO (International CivilrnAviation Organisation) specified inrn2002 that passports should featurernoptically variable devices (OVD) like holograms torncombat counterfeiters, particularly in the wake of 9/11.
