Nylon 66 woven fabric samples were subjected to atmospheric pressure helium/oxygen plasma for different durations. The dyeing of plasma treated samples was carried out with acid dye for 15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes to study the kinetics of dyeing. Increase in the initial dye uptake was observed for plasma treated samples when compared to untreated nylon, which evidences potentials of plasma technology for accelerated or short duration dyeing. SEM images revealed considerable etching of the surface, which escalated with exposure time. However, at longer plasma exposure times, etching caused severe degradation of the surface contributing to loss in the tensile strength of the fabric. The change in crystallinity after plasma treatment was investigated with X-ray diffraction and increase in air permeability was observed due to plasma action on the surface.
