FDI in retail: Should we not understand today's ground realities ?

FDI in multi-brand retail would offer variety of international brands to the choosy consumers, help in capacity building of Indian retailers, manufacturers and suppliers of textiles, clothing, accessories and other inputs. It would generate enormous employment in the area as salesmen, facilitators, cashiers, store maintenance, security, sourcing of goods, transportation, accounts, H.R. office management and other support services. It would increase employment on account of scaling up of units that may have to undertake manufacture and supply of textiles, clothing, accessories and inputs to such organized retailers. It would help the local vendors, traders and distributors to source goods from them, to supply to far flung consumers. Swadeshi movement may however get a setback. We have to choose between the development or getting isolated in the world.
