Naturally colored silk

Textile is the second largest industry next to food industry worldwide. Silk is a prominent component of textile industry because of its qualities such as smoothness and lustrous texture. Even today it is regarded as an item of luxury and was one of the most important commodities traded in ancient world. The sericulture (rearing of silkworms to produce silk) was started in ancient China. Today, China and India are the two main countries contributing more than 60% of the world's silk production. India is the second largest manufacturer of silkworm silk and Government of India is adopting new technologies in sericulture. Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) has initiated a multistate project to promote sericulture, beyond the traditional silk producing states, coordinated by Central Silk Board (CSB).
