They don't teach library history in library schools like they used to. Today, many freshly minted librarians can earn their Master of Library Science degree without being exposed to anything beyond the bare rudiments of library history. This is too bad, but such is the way things are. George S. Bobinski, who has spent three decades at the library school at University at Buffalo, State University of New York, where he is now professor and dean emeritus, has produced a number of important historical works. Probably Bobinski's most important is his classic 1969 history of Carnegie libraries, which remains a standard text on this subject.
