Studebaker could perform miracles on a shoestring budget. It had to. By 1958 it was on the ropes and the end seemed near, but the South Bend, Indiana, company wasn't down yet. The 1959 Lark compact was created by reducing the wheelbase and trimming the overhangs of the full-sized Studebak-ers. Thus, this pruned Studebaker managed to be both compact outside and roomy inside. Industrial designer Brooks Stevens was able to make the old Lark body look completely different for '64. The new flat grille and crisp lines looked up to date for the mid Sixties. By then,though, Studebaker was phasing out the Lark name. In spite of fresh styling, Studebaker was in a downward spiral and would build its last car in 1966.
