The article on the 1952 Fords really showed how important the acceptance of these cars was to Ford Motor Company. These Fords, Mercurys, and Lincolns where the second phase of the dynamic recovery that Ford went through after World War II under Henry Ford II.One interesting point that was not brought up in the article was that as originally planned the Ford was to only have the new overhead-valve six-cylinder engine and the "flathead" V-8 was to be dropped!In his book The Man Who Saved the V-8, former Ford executive Chase Morsey Jr. explains his role in getting the GM executives that took over Ford change their mind on a six-cylinder-only plan for Fords and light trucks.During World War II Morsey worked for Statistical Control for the Army Air Corps under future Ford Executives Tex Thornton, Robert McNamara, and Jack Reith. After the war Thornton put a group together to hire themselves out to corporate America. Henry Ford II, who was desperate to sort out the mess he inherited, hired this group of "Whiz Kids" that would drag Ford Motor Company our of the dark ages.
