摘要

James Scripps Booth drew cars in his notebooks when he should have been paying attention in class. Booth might have failed the 10th grade three times before quitting school, but he was one of the few able to turn his automotive dreams into reality. He was not only blessed with access to financing (his grandfather founded the Detroit News and the Scripps-Howard newspaper chain) but he had a good grasp of engineering and marketing. With financing from two uncles, James Booth set up a company in late 1914. William B. Stout, an engineer, was hired to make Booth's ideas and drawings into an automobile. Stout would later gain fame for his work on the Ford Tri-Motor pas- senger plane and the streamlined Stout Scarab car of the Thirties. Some consider the Scarab the first minivan.
