The 1968 El Camino began the third generation of Chevrolet's popular sedan pickup that continued through 1972. It was the first El Camino that wasn't required to share B-pillar elements and quarter panels with a passenger car, which allowed General Motors truck stylists to create a unique roofline. The sleek appearance, plus a cornucopia of luxury and high-performance equipment shared with related Chevelles, made the 1968-72 models owner favorites then and now.Chevrolet had introduced the El Camino for 1959 as a belated response to Ford's Ranchero that had bowed two years earlier. Both were based on "standard" two-door wagons, but replaced the covered rear seat/load area with an open cargo box. Each offered seating for three.
