Beefy good looking, and smooth running, Imperial in its first two years as a separate make was an impressive package. Especially sought after, though scarce, are the two-door hard tops (Newport in 1955, Southampton in 1956). Prices don't vary much between the two years, but collectors differ over them: 1955 means a "purer" design, no tailfins, and the automatic lever on the dash; 1956 means modest tailfins and pushbutton transmission-and 280 instead of 250 bhp thanks to a slightly larger "hemi." Relatively few come up for sale nowadays. The hardtop seems to be underpriced by the value guides; we found a few on offer for as much as $39,500, but only an exceptional car should command that price.
