When the Mercury Cougar first went on sale on September 30, 1966, it gave the brand a "ponycar" of its own in the mold of its hypersuccessful corporate cousin, the Ford Mustang. The Cougar would wear a performance mantle but with a veneer of sophistication that went beyond what the Mustang had to offer. Perhaps more importantly, the Cougar practically became synonymous with Mercury. For years after the car's debut, all Mercurys were advertised as being available at "the sign of the cat."
