Heading into the latter half of the Sixties, it was clear that America's national mood wiis changing.Social unrest, an increasingly unpopular war, and a brand of critical consumerism were challenging existing assumptions, and leaving their marks on government and business. This change was certainly reflected in the inner workings of the auto industry. Cars started to be designed and marketed to a new set of standards.Improved vehicle safety and "cleaner" exhaust err^Ssions became new govern­ ment-driven priorities, but even aestheti- cally cars seeftied to be moving with the tijnes. Recent squared-off design^ a reac­ tion to the bulbous excesses of the Fifties, were softening up a bit and a new design direction was being fashioned.
