Inspired by the dramatic creations by altered artists who are working with paper, clay, paint, beads, charms and found objects, textile and fiber artists are experimenting with the same techniques to modify fabric surfaces. For the consumer who ebellishes or alters wearables there is an opportunity to work with new materials and try different techniques. For the retailer, the trend provides inspiration for classes, demonstrations and store samples. It also opens up a broad range of products to sell. The term altered implies changed in some way. Unlike its wearable art antecedents, the new fashion art involves distressing, deconstructing and collaging techniques. Altered fashion is frequently based on a ready-to-wear garment, although any sewing enthusiast can apply these ideas to clothing made from scratch.
