Dyslipidemia and Type 2 diabetes in children below 18 years of age: an approaching avalanche

An avalanche of cardiovascular disease (CVD) inrnchildren with Type 2 diabetes is approaching. Inrnaddition to hyperglycemia, this population hasrnhigh rates of hyperlipidemia and other risk factorsrnincluding obesity, albuminuria, hypertension,rnsmoking, poor nutrition and sedentaryrnlifestyles. The combination of these risk factorsrncreates a sense of urgency and the temptation forrnintensive and aggressive lifestyle and pharmacologicrnintervention. However, in the absence ofrnevidence of the efficacy, effectiveness and safetyrnof these interventions in this population, thisrn‘shot gun’ approach is reckless.
