摘要

Respiratory tract infections are an important cause of hospita-lization in children. Most of these infections are caused by RNA viruses that produce influenza-like symptoms of variable severity. Because of cost and technical limitations, virol-ogical testing is currently done sporadically and for a limited number of viruses at the clinician's request. The availability of a molecular diagnostic test that allows the detection of all respiratory tract infection-related viruses would permit better management of patients and possibly limit unnecessary use of antibiotics.
