2011:Review of the Year on Stock Markets

Some may consider that the performance of cleantech on stock markets during 2011 is best forgotten. The year has been a wipe -out for most cleantech investors, with the large solar and wind energy stocks suffering severe losses virtually across the board. Renewable energy generators have tended to outperform the manufacturers of wind and solar equipment, but have also fallen sharply. Cleantech Investor has monitored the performance of a universe of 100 cleantech stocks - and selected addition in the form of the year's (few and far between) IPOs. The performance of these 100 stocks is summarised in this feature. In the year that saw the high profile bankruptcy of venture capital-backed Solyndra and a host of other prominent solar industry failures in the US, it's not surprising that solar sector stocks feature prominently amongst the worst performers of the year. The table below lists the 20 most severe underperformers out of the 100 stocks monitored by Cleantech Investor. It's perhaps no surprise that the worst three performers are all in the solar sector or that eight of the bottom ranking 20 stocks are solar sector stocks. Other notable underperformers include American Superconductor, embroiled in a legal dispute with China's Sinovel.
